The Day I Walked Away: Why Beauty Shouldn't Be a Performance

Recently, I went for a walk.

I had my hair in my regular afro cornrows, no makeup, a completely bare face with zero lip gloss, leggings, a Champion top, New Balance sneakers, and an Adidas backpack over my shoulders to carry my water.

As I walked, I passed a beautiful medical spa and beauty salon. Immediately, my Creative Director brain kicked in. I thought about walking through the doors right then and there to introduce RareAura and our luxury salon partnership model.

But I stopped myself.

I looked down at my clothes, thought about my bare face, and hesitated.

"I don't look the part," I thought. "I should come back when I'm polished."

So I walked away.

On the walk home, that hesitation stayed with me. I kept thinking about why I had held myself back, and then it hit me.

Somewhere along the way, many of us began to feel that beauty had to be performed before we could feel confident enough to show up.

Redefining the Rules of Beauty

We've been conditioned to believe that stepping into a luxury space, or representing a beauty brand, requires a certain uniform: flawless makeup, perfectly styled hair, and a carefully curated outfit.

We begin to believe we have to perform beauty before we're worthy of talking about it.

But that is the exact opposite of what RareAura stands for.

When I created RareAura, my vision was simple. I wanted to create products that enhance effortless beauty rather than replace it.

True luxury isn't about hiding who you are beneath layers of product because you feel inadequate without them. It's about choosing how you want to show up on any given day, entirely on your own terms.

The Duality of Effortless Confidence

If you feel confident enough to walk out of the door wearing your natural hair, a bare face, and your favourite activewear, that is beauty.

If you choose to spend an hour getting completely glammed up, applying your makeup with intention, and wearing an outfit that makes you feel your absolute best, that is beauty too.

One does not replace the other.

One is not superior to the other.

True confidence is knowing that your value, your beauty, and your authority remain completely intact, whether you're wearing a Champion top or a tailored blazer.

Makeup and skincare inspired beauty products should be an extension of your self care. They should be a joyful finishing touch, never a requirement to feel worthy of entering a room.

Showing Up As My Natural Self

As Creative Director of RareAura, I'm making a promise to myself and to our community.

I will no longer shy away from showing up as my natural self.

The next time I walk past a premium salon, whether I'm fully glammed or halfway through a workout with my backpack over my shoulders and not a trace of makeup on my face, I'm going to walk in.

Because a luxury beauty brand shouldn't be built on performance.

It should be built by a real person who believes in effortless confidence every single day.

Whether you're wearing your favourite activewear with a bare face or your favourite lipstick with a tailored blazer, you already look the part.

Beauty isn't a performance.

It's permission to show up as yourself.
